National Volunteers Week: Helping to save lives behind the scenes

Monday 2 June marks the start of the annual Volunteers’ Week.

We couldn’t achieve what we do without the support from our dedicated volunteers. From giving talks in the local community, to helping out at events and delivering CPR sessions – they make a life-saving difference every single day.

Thanks to their dedication and enthusiasm, we can raise awareness of the vital work of our Critical Care Team all across the region – ensuring we can continue to reach the patients who need us most.

A life-saving difference

In the last year, our remarkable team of volunteers were recorded to have donated more than 7,000 hours to our service – the equivalent of 291 days.

And as we embark on the biggest leap forward in our charity’s history – relocating our airbase to a site near Southampton Airport – their support is crucial. Since we launched our life-saving appeal in September 2024, our volunteers have been instrumental in spreading the word across the region – with Operation Airbase recently reaching £1.5 million raised.

By centralising our service, we will dramatically reduce our response times – helping us reach almost every patient in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight within 10 minutes of take-off.

Kirsty Davies, Volunteering Manager at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, said:

“During National Volunteers’ Week, we proudly celebrate our amazing volunteers — the people who help make everything we do possible. Our service simply couldn’t run, and lives couldn’t be saved, without the unique skills, energy, and compassion that each volunteer brings to their role.”

“Together, our volunteers have donated thousands of hours in so many different ways — from teaching lifesaving CPR skills to supporting events and everything in between.

“Thank you to every single one of our volunteers for the incredible difference you make. We’re so grateful to have you as part of the team.”
