Patient story wins Gold at the Smiley Charity Film Awards

Your votes meant we took home the top prize in the People’s Choice Award (£5 – £15 million category) at the prestigious Smiley Charity Film Awards for our powerful retelling of the day we flew to James.

James’ story

In July 2022, James was involved in a high-speed road traffic collision.

He sustained devastating injuries, including numerous fractured ribs, a fractured sternum, a fractured lower leg, a fractured arm and a fractured pelvis.

When our crew arrived on scene, James’ blood pressure was falling dangerously low and his heart rate was climbing, indicating he was bleeding internally. They gave him strong medication to ease the pain and administered a blood transfusion before setting off to hospital.

The Awards

Hosted by actor and comedian Ellie Taylor at the Odeon Luxe in London’s Leicester Square on Wednesday 20 March, the Smiley Charity Film Awards recognise organisations doing good in the world, by showcasing an array of films.

Our Director of Income and Engagement Keith Wilson was there to pick up the award, alongside Louis, Lauren and Scarlet from Millstream Productions, who recorded and edited the film.

Keith said:

“This film highlights the real impact of our service. Behind every call-out we attend there are patients in need and loved ones desperately hoping for good news.

“Our most incredible thanks go to James, Millie and Teddy for retelling their story so eloquently and sincerely, and the wonderful team at Millstream who consistently capture the essence of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance’s impact.

“But most of all, our thanks go to you. Winning the People’s Choice Award is extra special, as it was picked by the very same people who allow us to go out and save and improve lives such as James’ 365 days a year.”

Thank you to everyone for your incredible support.
