Half the beard, twice the heart – Paul goes the extra mile

Local supporter raises more than £2,000 growing a ‘half-beard’ for his Air Ambulance.

Paul Nicholls, from Ryde on the Isle of Wight, was inspired to support our service after two friends received expert care from our Critical Care Team, following separate cycling incidents.

After witnessing the expertise of our crew first hand, Paul set himself a “quirky” challenge – to raise vital funds and ensure our crew could continue providing life-saving care to those who need us most.

Paul and his ‘half-beard’

Paul reflected:

“I chose to do something ‘quirky’ to raise funds for the Air Ambulance because 12 years ago a friend had a cycling accident and I feel sure he would not have survived a road trip to hospital. Then in December last year, another friend had a cycling accident and once again, the Air Ambulance was crucial in getting him to hospital.

“Living as we do on an island, the service is absolutely necessary for transporting patients to receive specialist treatment which may not be available here.”

A life-saving difference

In 2024, approximately 10% of emergencies we attended were on the Isle of Wight. From road traffic collisions to serious medical incidents, our crew can provide both life-saving critical care at the scene but also transport patients to hospital for further specialist treatment.

For residents and visitors to the Isle of Wight, our service is a lifeline for the most critically ill and injured patients. With the nearest major trauma centre situated in Southampton – an hour-long trip by ferry across the Solent – we can transport patients by air, ensuring they reach hospital and further life-saving treatment as quickly as possible.

Emma Stileman, Supporter Engagement Officer at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, presented Paul with his fundraising total at a presentation on Friday (25 April) at the Royal Esplanade Hotel in Ryde.

Emma added:

“It has been amazing to work with Paul – seeing his enthusiasm and ability to think out of the box when it comes to raising awareness and funds for our service.

“I particularly liked seeing his half beard progress and how his community of friends and family supported him. Thank you so much again Paul!”
