A group of firefighters, terminal staff and the Managing Director from Southampton Airport have completed a mammoth team challenge, raising £2,700 for two charities close to their hearts: Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and the Firefighters Charity.

In the blistering heat on Friday 11 July, all nine members of the two teams set off on a daunting challenge from Southampton Airport.

  • Team 1 set off on foot as they ran 10km from the airport to Southampton ferry terminal heading for the Isle of Wight. On two wheels, the team cycled 100km around the Island, before running another 10km back to the airport.
  • Team 2 tackled 36 holes of golf during the same timeframe.

The final stretch

The challenge came to an end with both teams returning to the airport within around 45 minutes of each other, cheered on by colleagues and supporters.

Gavin Williams, Managing Director at Southampton Airport, said:

“We’re incredibly proud of our staff for completing such a creative and physically demanding challenge. Their efforts have raised valuable funds for two outstanding charities, and we’re grateful to everyone who supported them along the way.”

Rob Atwell, Southampton Airport Crew Commander, said:

“The conditions were really hard on the day, but we are blown away by the public’s generosity to donate to the challenge. The whole team are buzzing to have completed an event that has never been done before.

“When everything eventually stops hurting, we can’t wait to look at the next challenge!”

Keith Wilson, Director of Income and Engagement at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, said:

“Challenges such as this show exactly how much this service is valued by our supporters.

“It was an incredibly hot day and conditions were extremely challenging, particularly when covering as many kilometres as each team did. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who took part and everyone who donated to both teams.”

Huge congratulations and thank you to everyone from Southampton Airport and the Southampton Airport Fire Service for your support.
