Father-son team cycle to success

Four people stood by a large wooden sign that says "South Downs Way National Trail". They are holding a rectangular green banner with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance logo.

Our South Downs Way cyclists have raised an incredible £4,530 for their local Air Ambulance.

Reuben (10) and his dad, Dan, alongside Theo (9) and his dad, Dr Jamie Plumb, who is a key member of our Critical Care Team, completed the 100-mile cycle challenge in Eastbourne on Sunday (18 May), having set off from Winchester on Friday (16 May).

The father-son cycling group raised money towards our Operation Airbase appeal and Research and Development fund. The team were inspired to raise money for us after Theo sadly lost his ‘grandpa’ following an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in 2023.

Jamie said:

“’It was an incredible experience for us all. The boys did so well. I had forgotten just how hard a ride the South Downs Way is! There is virtually no flat on the entire route.

“We lucked out with the weather and had two amazing hosts for our stop overs. Dan and I are both very proud of Reuben and Theo.”

Operation Airbase

Operation Airbase is our £3.6 million appeal to help us relocate our Airbase and charity headquarters to a brand-new home near Southampton Airport. The move will significantly reduce response times for almost all missions – and secure our home for future generations.

The move from our current base in Thruxton, Andover, to a more central area will mean we can reach almost every patient in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight within 10 minutes of take-off – in contrast to the current time of 20 minutes or more for some.
