Nine-year-old James rocks for HIOWAA!
11th September 2018
Nine-year-old James was visiting family and enjoying a holiday on the Isle of Wight when he witnessed the Air Ambulance land nearby.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) were called to an emergency in Cowes on the 6th August and landed on the walkway at the beach.
James’ dad, Steve told us “He was amazed at how the pilot landed the helicopter so close to the beach and wanted to know what was going. We explained to him that the Air Ambulance is usually called out for very serious emergencies, so someone must be very poorly.”
This struck a chord with James and he decided that he wanted to do something to help keep the Air Ambulance flying.
Steve continued: “His mum told him that when she was a child, she enjoyed painting pebbles bright colours. He got straight to work and spent lots of time painting them with his Nanny and gave them all funny faces!”
Armed with a box of brightly coloured stones with googly eyes, the family headed to the Cowes Week firework finale where James sold the lot! With a little help from his parents, grandparents and friend Thomas, James raised a fantastic £100 for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
“The response he got from everyone was brilliant! They loved the idea, especially as they had ‘Fireworks 2018’ on the back which means that people will always remember where and when they got them. James was thrilled by how much he raised. We’re so proud of him and his fundraising efforts. Watch out for the 2019 fireworks as we hope to do the same again!”
Rachel Leaman, Director of Fundraising for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance added:
“James should be feeling very proud of himself. Not only has he put a smile on so many people’s faces, but the money he raised will make a difference to our Charity and I’m sure he will have inspired others to find innovative ways to fundraise too. Thank you so much for choosing to support us, James. You are a true HIOWAA Hero!”
