New three-way partnership announced

On 1st November 2018, we formalised a dynamic new three-way partnership between HIOWAA, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS), the Major Trauma Centre for the southern region, and South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS). We are now fully responsible for the funding of our service, with the clinical governance and management of our Critical Care teams of Doctors and Paramedics resting with UHS. Our collaboration with SCAS continues, as the dispatch authority.

We will step up our commitment to developing and expanding our Critical Care Teams of paramedics and doctors, so that we can extend and improve our ability and reach to respond to patient demand in our region. In December, 8 new paramedics will join the team at Helimed 56. Comprising 6 new permanent recruits, and 2 staff selected for secondment from SCAS, this will bring our strength up to 17, building in some much-needed resilience to our crew models.

 


Two HIOWAA Critical Care Team Vehicles will become operational, both with new specialist equipment. Since our first Critical Care Team Vehicle became operational in February 2017, we have doubled the number of incidents that we attend every day. In 2017 the Air Ambulance responded to 784 incidents across our community and our Critical Care Team Vehicle to an additional 733.

 

Working closely with our partners, we will focus on providing our teams of paramedics and doctors with more expanded career challenges that are closely following national trends. This will build on the work we have already undertaken with UHS for the education and training of our specialist paramedics to advanced and consultant level. In addition, we are committed to expanding our PHEM (pre-hospital emergency medicine) doctors training programme.

 

 

We will improve the systems we use to collect and analyse our data so that in the future, we will be in a better position to respond to the needs of our community.

“Responding to patient demand, we are evolving and improving our service so that those with life-threatening conditions continue to get advanced Trauma or Medical treatment immediately, together with high speed air transfer to the most appropriate Major Trauma Centre for their needs. Our patients are at the heart of all that we do and we want to ensure that they receive the best possible care in their hour of need”.

Under our new operating model, our daily operating costs will increase to £15,000 because, for the first time, we will assume full responsibility for the funding of our service, including the paramedics and doctors who make up our Critical Care Teams.

We have come a long way since we first began operations in 2007 when the Air Ambulance provided only a rapid transfer service from the scene of an incident to hospital. Today our teams of highly specialised doctors and paramedics, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and advanced medication, bring the hospital to the patient both by air and by road.
